The experience in context

Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo occupies a distinctive setting in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province, on a forested peninsula between Pacific waters and beaches. The hotel blends a full-service luxury resort experience with access to outdoor adventure, from water activities to forest trails.

Its official resort description emphasises nature, relaxation and adventure; the property’s own Spanish-language page cites a decade of Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star recognition. It is an attractive choice for travellers who want an exceptional hotel without feeling detached from the natural landscape.

Architecture & atmosphere

Architecture shaped by the landscape

The resort’s official press facts credit architect Ronald Zürcher and describe a design influenced by Costa Rican flora and fauna. Natural materials, including local stone and caña brava, help connect the buildings to their setting.

The appeal is less about a single spectacular tower than a series of spaces that encourage outdoor living. Views, vegetation and the movement between accommodation and the coastline shape the overall experience.

Stay beautifully

Rooms, suites and residences

The resort offers guest rooms, suites and private residences across tropical grounds. The official accommodation listings show meaningful differences between standard rooms, larger suites and residences with private pools or extensive outdoor space.

Do not assume every accommodation category includes a private pool. A family might prefer a suite with a separate sleeping area, while a group could find a residence more practical. Compare confirmed occupancy, views and how far the room sits from resort facilities.

New for late 2026: The resort announced ten new one-bedroom Papagayo Suites, available to reserve for stays beginning 17 December 2026. Each is described as approximately 112 square metres (1,206 square feet), with a king bedroom, separate living area, generous terrace, marble bathroom and Papagayo Bay views. These suites are not an option for stays before their announced opening date. For later arrivals, compare the new suite category against established suites and residences, especially if you need a second bedroom or a private pool; neither should be inferred from the new suite description.

Flavour and place

Food and a sense of place

Dining is one of the clearest ways to choose how you want to experience the resort. Bahía centres on wood-fired cooking and locally sourced ingredients, while Pesce serves Italian dishes and local seafood with ocean views. Virador Beach Club takes a different approach: its Mediterranean and Levantine menu, overseen by Chef Khaled Natour, complements a beach-club setting designed by architect Jorge Borja. In 2024, Virador was included in the Prix Versailles selection of the world’s most beautiful restaurants, making it particularly interesting for design-minded guests. Palapita offers a more casual option near the tennis facilities.

Opening days, seasonal availability, reservation requirements and meal-plan inclusions vary. Confirm them with the resort rather than assuming that every venue or special dining experience is included in your rate.

Ask which restaurants are open during your dates, whether advance reservations are needed and how meal plans apply to children. If you plan off-property adventures, a flexible dining schedule may be more useful than a rigid package.

A slower rhythm

Spa, beaches and slow mornings

The resort combines wellness facilities with two coastal settings and opportunities to spend time outdoors. Spa treatments can provide a slower counterpoint to days of surfing, boating or exploring.

Think about the season: Costa Rica’s green months can offer lush scenery, but rain patterns may affect activities. Book with realistic expectations rather than assuming every day will be cloudless beach weather.

Beyond the room

Nature is the real luxury

Peninsula Papagayo offers guided adventure and outdoor activities. Official resort information highlights the Palmares Outpost, which includes aerial trails, ziplines and ropes elements, alongside other nature and sport options.

These experiences may have age, fitness, weather and booking requirements. Families should check which activities are appropriate for each child and which are included, rather than treating every promoted experience as complimentary.

Getting here

Planning the journey

The resort is in northwestern Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region. It is a different proposition from staying near Arenal Volcano or in the capital; those areas are not casual afternoon excursions.

Choose it for a coastal and peninsula-focused itinerary. If your trip also includes rainforest interiors or volcanoes, consider a split stay and account for road travel time.

Airport logistics: Four Seasons lists Guanacaste Airport (LIR) at approximately 37.5 km (23.3 miles) and about 40 minutes by car. The resort can arrange a private transfer with an airport meet-and-greet; verify its price and whether it is included in your booking. For a short stay, this relatively direct airport transfer is a meaningful advantage over combining the resort with distant inland destinations.

Travelling with children: The official resort facts describe Kids for All Seasons and a separate Tuanis Teen Center. Ask about current age brackets, supervision, operating hours and whether organised activities cost extra. The peninsula also offers Papagayo Park facilities and adventure options, but not every activity suits every age.

Inside Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo

Before you book

Check room views, transfer times, seasonality and whether your chosen suite includes the amenities you expect.

Compare the precise room category, occupancy, views, included meals, cancellation terms and transfers. A marketing photograph does not guarantee a specific room, view or amenity. Ask the hotel to confirm features essential to your stay in writing.

Five questions worth asking before paying

  1. Which room is actually reserved? Request the full category name, bed configuration, maximum occupancy and a written note of any promised view or pool.
  2. When is the room available? For the new Papagayo Suites, check the announced 17 December 2026 start date and whether your travel dates fall after it.
  3. What will your family use? Confirm the current Kids for All Seasons or teen-programme age bands, opening hours, supervision and extra charges.
  4. What is included? Compare breakfast, dining credits, spa access, excursions and transfer costs line by line.
  5. What if plans change? Save the cancellation deadline, deposit rules and weather-related activity policies before final payment.
